3 signs that it’s time to repair or replace your toilet

Toilets may be built to last, but with all the use they get, they do require the occasional repair and, at a certain point, the whole unit needs replacing. Here are three signs that you need to have your toilet repaired or replaced.

1. Cracking

Because of the weight we put on our toilet day after day, the porcelain can begin to crack. And the tank, which is fairly thin, is vulnerable to impacts. Cracks should be dealt with right away, as they only grow with time and will eventually cause leaks.

If a crack in the bowl or tank isn’t too deep and is above the water, it can often be fixed with plumber’s putty or a sealant. Deeper cracks or cracks located below the level of the water often require that you replace your toilet.

2. Leaks

External leaks are hard to miss, and they’re a clear sign that you need to call a plumber. Internal leaks, on the other hand, can go unnoticed for a long time. This is when water leaks from the tank to the bowl. A hissing noise when your toilet isn’t in use is a telltale sign.

If you suspect an internal leak, a good way to confirm it is to put some food colouring in the tank, wait about ten minutes, then look to see if it any coloured water has entered the bowl.

Leaks should be dealt with immediately, even slow ones. That’s because they usually indicate cracks or damaged components. In either case, the issue will only grow worse with time.

3. Constant running

A constantly running toilet is noisy and increases your water bill. The cause of the problem is usually either a flapper valve that doesn’t create a proper seal or a damaged fill valve. Both of these parts can be easily replaced. Once a professional has correctly diagnosed the problem your plumber can take care of the issue.

Note that if you’re getting your toilet repaired over and over, it’s probably time to replace the whole thing. Moreover, replacing an old toilet with a newer low-flow model will save you money on your water bill.
